Day 160

The Oregon School for the Blind was established in 1872, and its first home was in a house in Salem. Later it was moved to a new home on 12th Street between Ferry and State. That building later became the home of Salem's first hospital. What a coincidence. Salem Hospital has now taken over the School for the Blind's final home, where it moved in 1894, at the corner of Church and Mission. The original building on that site was torn down in the 1950s, and the brick school now being destroyed by the hospital was built in its place. It seems rather sudden and sad that such a historic building could end up no more than piles of rubble.
